How Connected Do You Feel To Life?

A few days ago a good friend contacted me to say that he had just received my monthly newsletter and that he couldn't believe how relevant and helpful it was to the changes that are happening in his life at present. He said it was 'spooky timing'...

Have you ever had a similar experience? Perhaps you've phoned a friend you haven't seen for a long time to reconnect with them, and learned that this was exactly the time they needed to talk to someone?

Or maybe you did a small thing for someone, which you later discovered turned into a hugely positive moment in their life journey?

Telephone call

This experience reminded me that we are much more connected to others, and in fact to the whole universe, than we think we are.

We need each other in so many ways, even if it's as simple as relying on the people who work at the local utility company to supply our fresh water, electricity or gas.

But our connectedness goes much deeper than just the material world.

Being a physics teacher as well as a spiritual counseller, I am especially intrigued by an experiment that demonstrates how we can affect our reality just by thinking about it.

Double Slit Experiment

Dean Radin's double slit experiment

In Dr. Eben Alexander's book 'Living In A Mindful Universe', he explains how in 2012, Dean Radin and his colleagues set up a series of 'double slit' experiments that demonstrated how photons of light change their behaviour when a distant human observer simply thinks about the experiment.

Distant human visualisation of the experiment caused the photons of light to behave as particles, rather than as waves. Even more amazing, is that Dr. Radin's team found that distance did not affect the results in any way. This 'collapsing of the wave function' has now been observed and repeated many times by other quantum research scientists around the world.

So when you have a thought about something, you are indeed affecting it in some way. This could be at a very small level, but it might be enough, especially if you repeat the thought, to create a noticeable change in reality.

ripples on water

Think of your thoughts as ripples spreading out on the surface of a pond when a stone is thrown in. These ripples interact with the fabric of life and the universe. Your actions, words and emotions also spread out from you and cause so many changes that you couldn't possibly imagine.

So we are indeed connected to one another and the whole universe at a profoundly deep level.

Quite a thought, eh?

In spiritual terms, we hear about the 'Law of Attraction'. This states that whatever you 'send out' into the world will be drawn to you, i.e. like attracts like.

Law of Attraction

It becomes clear then, that we would be wise to develop a greater awareness of what we're 'sending out' at any one moment. Is it uplifting, joyous, and loving? Or negative, angry and vexatious? What, therefore, are we drawing back to ourselves?

In a nutshell, we can affect our world for the better, simply by being better ourselves.

You've probably heard of the phrase, "Be the change that you want to see". This is the paraphrased version of Mahatma Ghandi's original words, which sums up our connectedness so well:

"We but mirror the world. All the tendencies present in the outer world are to be found in the world of our body. If we could change ourselves, the tendencies in the world would also change. As a man changes his own nature, so does the attitude of the world change towards him. This is the divine mystery supreme. A wonderful thing it is and the source of our happiness. We need not wait to see what others do.”
