Activate Your Inner Guidance

Last night I had a dream which shocked me. It took me back to my secondary school and I was late for class. In real life, I remember being wary of the teacher of this particular class, because he would often shout aggressively to keep us under control, "Veux tu un coup?!" (do you want a punch?) Thankfully, he never carried out the threat, but the violence of the words have stayed with me up to this day.

Classroom

In the dream, I enter the classroom with some other students. I'm then sitting at the top of some stairs in the classroom looking down at the scene below while the teacher tells us that he will be punishing the students who were late by holding them back after lessons for the remainder of the term.

If that wasn't enough, the teacher then proceeds to punch one of the students in the head several times. I'm shocked and outraged at this display of violence.

Having interpreted dreams for several years for other people, the main message of this dream was startlingly clear to me: If I continue to be 'in my head' by depending too much on rational thought (being at the top of the stairs), I risk manifesting actual physical damage to myself in the form of a stroke (being punched in the head).

brain overheating

You might say that this is rather an extreme interpretation, and in a way you would be correct because dreams usually exaggerate to get our attention. However, I have seen a lot of head injury type dreams for other people that nearly always mean the same thing - stop over-thinking, or risk manifesting a physical head-related problem. Unfortunately, in some cases when these warnings went unheeded for several years, it did actually result in a stroke.

Thankfully, these health warnings are often given to us years in advance of developing a health problem. Nevertheless, I spent the next hour in bed worrying and unable to go back to sleep while I was (ironically) analysing the finer meanings of the dream.

So how did this dream relate to what was going on in my life at that moment?

It's a simple connection. The previous day, I had become more and more anxious about an upcoming client meeting, and felt that I needed to refresh as much of my past training and learning as possible to prepare for it.

client meeting

My dream was reflecting the 'head stress' I was subjecting myself to by doing this, and asking me to 'come down the stairs' from my rational mind. My dream was asking me to trust and listen to my inner guidance - my intuition.

Throughout our childhood and education, most of us are taught that the rational mind should be the ruler of our life. We are encouraged to believe that if we are not logical in our thinking, then we are being foolish.

Rational thought

This approach to life is particularly encouraged in the sciences so it's not surprising that many of us have developed the tendency to over-think and over-analyse every situation we encounter.

Using the rational mind is not wrong. It's simply that we have become too dependent on it. We have forgotten the other, and arguably more important, way of navigating through life; using our feelings, and what we might call our 'heart intelligence'.

In recent years, science has discovered that the heart has its own 'mini brain' made up of clusters of different types of neurons. The heart has its own intelligence and sends messages to the brain more often than the brain sends messages to the heart!

Heart with a brain

These messages from the heart are what we call 'feelings'. However, in today's society, this vital source of information and guidance is usually lost in a sea of rational thought.

So how can we reconnect with our heart's intelligence?

The inner world of feelings is a feminine energy aspect that can be cultivated and brought back into balance to work alongside the masculine energy of rational thought. All of us have many types of masculine and feminine energies within us, and it is through the experiences of life that we get the opportunity to heal and balance them for our optimal growth.

Masculine and feminine balance

One way of doing this is to encourage the subconscious mind to unlock its censorship of our feelings. Often, we will need to complete a therapy such as Cutting The Ties That Bind to achieve this reconnection, which is often blocked in early childhood.

Cutting The Ties That Bind helps a great deal, but we will then need to continue to nuture our heart connection, just like tending to a garden. Remember that we are surrounded by the influences of rational thought every day, so it is important to water the internal garden of our heart on a regular basis.

Establishing a routine of practising 'heart-brain coherence' every week is a great way to maintain the connection with our heart. To help you do this, I have recorded a powerful 20 minute heart opening meditation , or you can enjoy the shorter free version here.

As for my upcoming client meeting... I will be endeavouring to balance my heart with my head, and trusting that my feelings will guide me for my client's (and my) highest good.

Holding the intention to listen to our feelings and trusting our inner guidance is the key to making progress. Whatever life brings our way, the simple act of coming into heart coherence can be transformational.

I hope that you can cultivate and benefit from the wisdom that your heart imparts to you every day. Intuition is a great treasure and given to us to help our lives flow with greater ease, joy and love.
